How to simplify/optimize this query?

Hi,
Could the following query be simplified/optimized? The database has a table
that maps users to locations, locations to chapters, and sections to
chapters. I need to issue a query that would return a list of sections that
can be assigned to a user (excluding the ones that have already been
assigned) .

[...]
SELECT SectionID, [Name],
FROM Section
WHERE SectionID NOT IN (SELECT SectionID FROM UserSection WHERE UserID = @.UserID) AND
SectionID IN (SELECT DISTINCT SectionID FROM ChapterSection
WHERE ChapterID IN
(SELECT DISTINCT ChapterID FROM ChapterLocation
WHERE LocationID IN
(SELECT LocationID FROM UserLocation WHERE UserID = @.UserID)

I realize that this might not be as clear as it should be but I'd appreciate
_any_ suggestions.

I missed the join from ChapterSection.SectionID back to Section.SectionID.
See the corrected query below. If this still doesn't work for you, please
post the table DDL and sample data so that I can test the solution.

How to show two dataset with equal & non equal of multiple selection.

Dear Friends,

In my report, I am having Listbox for users to choose Country, City & Company.
The user can choose Country. Based on the country selection, cities will be listed out.
Based on the city selection, Companies will be listed out.
They can choose companies.

Now, I have to show two set of results.

A. List of Companies as per selection ( dataset with equal to selection )

B. List of Companies which are not selected ( ie dataset with not equal to selection )

I have created a dataset with all companies and filter it by selection. When I tried with the filter option in the Dataset, I am able to check for only one value and not for multiple value. If the selection is one company, then I can filter it. But if they choose 5 companies, I am not not able to filter it. Is there any other option I can try out.

It sounds like you are using RS 2005, since you have multi value report parameters.

On the filter tab, you can set the filter operator to "IN" (this is the last entry in the list of filter operators). Assuming that your Company report parameter is marked as "multi-value", you can then use the following filter settings:

Filter expression: =Fields!CompanyName.Value
Filter operator: IN
Filter value: =Parameters!Company.Value

The IN-filter can automatically deal with multi-value parameters (which represent an array of values).

Now, I am able to get the value for the first option. ( with IN )

But I could n't find any NOT IN option in the filter for the second set of results ?

Rakin, a "not in" filter is currently not natively supported in Reporting Services. You would need to look into ways of achieving this directly in the query by using the NOT IN clause:

E.g. select * from products where ReorderLevel not IN (@.Level)

In RS 2005, I have a report with 5 report parameters. Two of those parameters are query based in order to populate drop down lists in the report for the user.

The BUG occurs when the report initialises: the first query based parameter is populated but the second query-based parameter is blank. I select the available values in both parameters and click on the "View Report" button but the same BUG occurs: the first parameter is populated but the second parameter's values are reset. If I select values from both and click the View Report button a few times it will eventually display the report.

Have any of you encountered anything like this?

In RS 2005, I have a report with 5 report parameters. Two of those parameters are query based in order to populate drop down lists in the report for the user.

The BUG occurs when the report initialises: the first query based parameter is populated but the second query-based parameter is blank. I select the available values in both parameters and click on the "View Report" button but the same BUG occurs: the first parameter is populated but the second parameter's values are reset. If I select values from both and click the View Report button a few times it will eventually display the report.

Have any of you encountered anything like this?

How to show a rectangle in a SQL report

Does anyone know how I can display a rectangle in the rendered SQL report?
I need this to assist the users of the report to have an area in the printed
report column so that they could do a manual check mark or some kind of a
mark on the rows of the report. I tried to place an image but it slows the
report rendering. Thanks in advance.

1.In one of the text boxes, drag a rectangle. This will allow you to
drop other items within the texbox/rectangle.
2. Within that rectangle, draw another rectangle to be the "checkbox".
3. Set the borders appropriately to display an outline (set top,
bottom, left, and right BorderStyle to Solid)
If you are free form designing a report with lists, just drop the
rectangle, resize, and set the borders as in above.

I have some users that I want to be able to view/add sql job under sql
agent. How can I give them access to this without making them sys admins?

The users will need to own the jobs to view them if you
don't want them to be members of sysadmin role.
The public role has permissions to execute sp_add_job.

Thanks for the hint, but I do not want to have this user as an owner. The owner should be another account. This user (developer) should only have the capability to execute jobs we (DBA) provided to him. He should not see ALL jobs nor should he execute ALL jobs. I would like to set permissions in a way that he can start/stop/enable/disable ONE specific job.

Is there an easy way to realize it? Or maybe a more complicated way?

I believe the Adventure Works sample AMO application has code for creating permissions (search for CubePermission or DimensionPermission in the code):

In general, you can use this 'reverse engineering' trick to get AMO code:

- create the objects you want with the user interface (in BI Development Studio with wizard/editors or in SQL Management Studio); in this case, use the security dialog to setup the database/dimensions/cubes permissions

- then look at the XML: in BI Development Studio, right click on the cube item -> View Code and search for the CubePermission XML fragment to see the CubePermission, similar for DimensionPermission; in SQL Management you can right click on the cube, script Alter or Create, and then find the CubePermission XML fragment

- to be easier to read, copy the CubePermission in a separate file

- there is a 1-to-1 relationship between the AMO classes and properties and the XML, by reading the XML you will know what classes and properties to set; for example, the <CubePermission> element tells you to create in AMO a CubePermission object; the <Name> sub-element corresponds to the Name property

I wonder how I can separate between different user's rights in the same
database?
In one database -i have user A and user B, how do I set the rights so
that user A can not access user B's objects and opposite? This rights
should be valid for all previously created objects and for objects
created later.
RegardsIf there is truly no interaction between the two sets of objects I question
why they are even in the same database? But there are several things you
can do. First remember that no one by default can access any objects unless
you give them permissions to do so. You can create a role for each set of
objects and add each user to the respective roles. Then only grant
permissions to those objects for that role that you want them to access.
This gives you the flexibility of adding other users later on as well. You
can also create the object with a particular owner to separate them but you
still need to set up the permissions appropriately. Check out GRANT and
DENY in BooksOnLine.

How to send notification to multiple email accounts?

I am in process of setting up job failure notification and one of the requirements that I have is to send notification to multiple users. I would appreciate any suggestion. One of the possible ways would be to create some sort of group account on exchange server with all users added as members. Is there anyway though where I could use users' individual accounts and based on that forward notification to them?

I am sorry for not mentioning in advance that I am using Database Mail in SQL Server 2005 and that is why I am wondering how I could send notification to multiple users from job failure. As I understand using Profile would send email to only one of the accounts listed in that profile. I am quite familiar with Database Mail and I have been using it successfully for almost a year now.

Without creating distribution list or group recipient from Exchange Server, I couldn't find any other way to send job failure notification to multiple people. My solution was to create a procedure that collects history of failed job and add it as a last step to my jobs so that whenever job failed it would execute that last step. Within that procedure I used sp_send_dbmail with a list of users email addresses. Solution seem to work brilliant.
