How to simulate Nothing from a deep link

Hello-

I'm working on an app that will create an HTTP connection to the SSRS server to gather a PDF generated by SSRS and place it on the LAN. looks something like this :

http://server/ReportServer?%2fDEV%2frpt_Sheet&rs%3aCommand=Render&rc:Toolbar=false&userID=NULL&StoreID=23&rs:Format=PDF

We have a few reports where 1 or more parameters can be null, but I'm having one heck of a time trying get this to work with a null value. Does anyone know what value is actually passed to SSRS when a parameter is NULL?

I have tried Nothing, but to no avail.

Thanks in adavance,

Tristan

Do not include that parameter in the link and set its default value as null or send something like this:

parameter name = "param1"

&param1%3aisnull=True

http://reportserver/?%2fReport1Test&param1%3aisnull=True&rs%3aParameterLanguage=&rc%3aParameters=Collapsed

how to simplify what i'm doing (AS the solution?)

i need to do create reports that perform queries where the results are
percentages of total count divided by counts based on different
subquery where values.
a la ...
select 100 * (totalCount/ (select count where columnA value is x) as
partialCount1) as perc1,
100 * (totalCount/ (select count where columnA value is y) as
partialCount2) as perc2
etc
from myTable where (..bunch of where stuff..)
I have simplified the above example just for brevity here.
So, I hate these kinds of nested queries - and they get incredibly
complex to read. I could break them up into longer scripts to simplify
- but I am wondering if there's another way.
The data I am using is from a warehouse on SQL 2005. I have very little
experience with warehouses - and know little about analysis services
and OLAP.
My question is whether it is possible to use Analysis services to
create new tables that make this data far easier to query? That's the
path I am considering venturing down, but I don't want to hit a dead
end... and need just to know if this makes sense. That is to use
Analysis services to crunch out some new tables from the tables I am
using which would have the results neatly packaged in a table or 2 that
is fast and simple to query. Is that the idea of AS?
thx for helping a learner here. let me know if i am making enough sense
in the question.
Hi
This looks like you are trying to do a pivot, in which case the best
solutions will be at the front end although with SQL 2005 you have the new
pivot function, check out the topic "Using PIVOT and UNPIVOT " in books
online.

How to show duplicates in reports

I'm trying to create a report in Sql Server 2005 Reporting Services where it will display duplicates rows in the reports. I'm unable to find the property that enables this. I would need something like HideDuplicates = false, but that is not the way it is intended to be used. If HideDuplicates is left blank, it seems to still hide duplicate values if the preceding row matches.

The report is a crosstab type, so we are using a Matrix for the report item. I'll illustrate with a simple example:

This is what we currently get:

CatagoryClassDetail
Type 1AItem 1
BItem 2
Item 3
Type 2AItem 4
BItem 5

This is what we want:

CatagoryClassDetail
Type 1AItem 1
Type 1BItem 2
Type 1BItem 3
Type 2AItem 4
Type 2BItem 5

I'm sure its something simple, but we just cant seem to find the solution,

Thanks

Darin

Rather than using a matrix report, I think a simple list report would do what you are looking for (if you don't do any grouping). You can still use aggreated fields in the simple list report.

|||

Unfortunately we need to use a matrix as the actual report is a crosstab, I just didn't illustrate that in the example for simplicity sake.

I think the report looks nicer with the blanks and is easier to read; however, if it is dumped to Excel for further analysis ( which in our actual report will happen often), the auto filter function will not work as the blank rows are not included if a specifiec catagory is selected. Only the first row that is allgned with the merged cells is shown.

|||

Open the code view of the report and search for the XML node called "HideDuplicates". See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152916.aspx for on how to set. Removing the element entirely will cause the values to appear in each row on the report, like you'd want to have for use in Excel.

My problem is related. I have business analysts using the Report Builder tool basically as a querying tool. 90% of the time, they export to Excel and then crunch there. While I know this is not intended usage of Reporting Services, I am still disappointed by the fact that, in order to get duplicates to appear, you must go code-side, something I can't push off on a BA.

Any ideas for editting a Report Builder generated report file on the fly, to remove "HideDuplicates" elements?

|||

Try setting the "HideDuplicate" property on the "Type 1" textbox in your report.

Here are the defintion of the Textbox properties:

=========================================

Textbox

The Textbox element has the following attributes/elements in addition to what it inherits from ReportItem:

Attributes/Elements

Name

Card

Type

Description

Value

1

Expression

(Variant)

An expression, the value of which is displayed in the text-box.

This can be a constant expression for constant labels.

CanGrow

0-1

Boolean

Indicates the Textbox size can increase to accommodate the contents

CanShrink

0-1

Boolean

Indicates the Textbox size can decrease to match the contents

HideDuplicates

0-1

String

Indicates the text should not be displayed when the value of the expression associated with the report item is the same as the preceding instance.The value of HideDuplicates is the name of a containing grouping (other than the current grouping) or data set over which to apply the hiding.Each time a new instance of that group is encountered, the first instance of this report item will not be hidden. Rows on a previous page are ignored for the purposes of hiding duplicates.If the textbox is in a table or matrix cell, only the text will be omitted.The textbox will remain to provide background and border for the cell.Outside of a table/matrix cell, the background and borders are omitted as well.

Ignored in matrix subtotals.

ToggleImage

0-1

Element

Indicates the initial state of a toggling image should one be displayed as a part of the textbox.

UserSort

0-1

Element

Indicates an end-user sort control should be displayed as a part of this textbox in the UI.

DataElementStyle

0-1

Enum

Indicates whether textbox value should render as an element or attribute: Auto (Default) | AttributeNormal | ElementNormal. Auto uses the setting on the Report element.

|||Sorry for the late reply, but the 'HideDuplicates' element is nowhere to be found in the report definition.|||I've tried setting the HideDuplicates to a number of the values available in the dropdown list and it still does not solve my problem. Other than that, I really dont know what to set it to.|||You have to change the DiscourageGrouping Property on the fields you don't want the report to be hidden when grouped. Do it on the Report Model Designer.

How to share user-defined data type in different database?

Hi,everyone.

I have defined a data type "OC_BUN_NAME" in database "CVPRO". I want to create a table tempdb.dbo.CVPRO in SQL SERVER 2005 system Database tempdb. But SQL SERVER 2005 DBMS gives a Error Messages:"Can not find the data type OC_BUN_NAME".

How can I do? How to use data types in the other database?

Please give me some advice. Thank you in advance.Hi
You should define the same data type in tempdb.
Also it would be good to define it in model database.
The tempdb is destroyed and recreated (from model) after each SQL Server restart. So if you define your data type in model database you do not have to redefine it in tempdb each time you reboot the server or restart SQL Server service.

Thank you, rudra.

However, after I define my data types in MODEL system databse, if I create a new database, the defined data types will automatically be added into the new database. I hope it can not happen. How can I do?

Thank you!|||Why do you want to create any tables in tempdb?|||Good lord. Don't even touch tempdb.
And in my opinion, don't bother with user-defined datatypes. They have little purpose.|||In SQL Server 2005, we can create a table in tempdb database so that different users can get access to data in the table. At the same time, when the SQL Server Services stop, tables created in tempdb database will be automatically destroyed. So in our project we want ot create a table in the tempdb database. However when we create the table, we can not use user-defined data type(the data types are defined in database "CVPRO"). Please give me some help.

Thanks!|||Hi
If you want to use user-defined data type you need to define it in current database (database where you create the table).

Can't you use standard tables in your 'CVPRO' database and delete it when it is not used?
You can always create the SQL Server Agent job dropping not needed tables and schedule it to run daily at i.e. 11 PM...

What exactly you want to do?

How to share dimensions for multiple cubes in AS 2005?

Hello,

I have a couple of cubes that I created using a wizard in AS 2005. Every time I create a new cube, a AS wizard adds dimensions with 1,2 etc at the end of their names. Is it possible to use/share existing dimensions which are used by other cubes instead of having bunch of dimensions which are the same and the only difference is their name?

Thanks!

When you are going through cube building wizard, once you get to the Review Shared Dimensions page, select all the dimensions that you want to reuse. The wizard will reuse these dimensions and it won't create the dimensions with the 1,2 etc.

Hope this helps.

Van Dieu

|||Altering what you have already generated may be complicated. I don't use the wizard to generate cubes, so I'm not sure how much work is involved to change it. It might be as simple as opening the cube editor, deleting the dimensions that are duplicates, and adding the ones that you want to use, but I doubt it. You'll probably have to alter the data source view and the dimension usage in the cube editor as well.|||

Actually, it is that easy. You can just open up the cube editor and delete all the duplicated dimensions. Then on the dimension usage tab add them back in (the dimensions that you want to share).

How to setup profile, roles, etc in my hosted sqlserver?

I've been working with godaddy.com, and when I setup there the sqlserver databases it tells me if I want to create the tables and stored procedures that conform the typical profile, roles and users features... the same as if I execute the aspnet_regsql.exe

Now I'm working with anotherhoster (aruba) and I've setup the database OK, but i didn't found any way to setup the profile, roles, users, etc features.
Aruba uses the mssql server web admin.

How can I setup this features? Of course, aruba doesn't let me to execute the aspnet_regsql.exe...

- InstallCommon.sql
- InstalMembership.sql
- InstalPersistSqlState.sql
- InstallPersonalization.sql
- InstallProfile.sql
- InstallRoles.sql
- InstallSqlState.sql
- InstallSqlStateTemplate.sql
- InstallWebEventSqlProvider.sql

Should I run all??

On other hand, I've tried the first one and I've found a lot of problems. The first was the name of the database, taht I've changed, but the next was this error:

"Specified owner name 'dbo' either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it."

What should I do? Remove all references to dbo?

Thanks in advance.|||Yes, remove all references to dbo.

how to setting report viewer to view exactly as VS preview

hi all..I'm new here and got a problem, and i hope you guys can help me.
My problems:
I want to create one card , size : height =2.25, width =4.5 and it should be
on 2 page because I want to make it front and back.
i 'm using rectangle and textbox, and i set the page break after first
rectangle . When i preview the card, it shows 2 pages, one front and one back,
as it should be.
when i preview using print layout at VS, it became 5 pages. I already setting
using
[(Report.PageWidth - Report.LeftMargin - Report.RightMargin)>=Body.Width] but
it won't do.
And one more thing, when preview it on browser (report viewer), it shows one
full page, not the size of the card. So how can I make the preview setting
only preview the card exactly like the layout of the card, not full screen?
any help will be appreciated. thank you.the HTML version is optimized for a web rendering and the size of the pages
will be different.
but if the user try to print or export in pdf, then the layout will follows
your needs.
maybe you can try to change the interactive size of the report (not the page
size, the interactive size) to see if you can force the HTML page size.

how to set up a cube for pivot table service in Excel?

background: sql2k and analysis service
I know how to create a cube in analysis service, but how to view the
cube in the Pivot Table services in Excel?
when I go to Data|PivotTable and PivotChart report...|External Data
Source|
Get Data | OLAP cube, then browse to the server, but I don't see any of
the cubes being created.
I'm using Standard SQL2k. Is this a sql version issue or should i
create cube differently?
thank youHave you set permissions on the cube to allow access from the user running
Excel?
Under Database Roles in Analysis manager.
Standard version includes analysis services, with EE having increased
features in some areas, so I do not think that is your problem.

All Users database role. (enforced on client).
i then go thru the steps in Excell, Data|PivotTable and PivotChart

Get Data | OLAP cube, but then where shoudl browse to from there?
i check the book online about the local cube. it was not helping. i

nothing to do with connecting to an analysis services cube.
After you select olap cube you should be able to select thser server and

How to set sheetname on an Excel destination component ?

Hello, I am trying to create a simple package programmatically. I am following the examples in the BOL, and from some advice here. I am getting stuck at creating an Excel Destination and setting its sheetname. Everything works fine, including setting the output Excel filename. I get a runtime exception when I try to set the sheetname via SetComponentProperty. Is there another way, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any info you may have.

' Create and configure an OLE DB destination.

Dim conDest As ConnectionManager = package.Connections.Add("Excel")

conDest.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & _

Dts.Variables("User::gsExcelFile").Value.ToString & ";Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=YES"""

conDest.Name = "Excel File"

conDest.Description = "Excel File"

Dim destination As IDTSComponentMetaData90 = dataFlowTask.ComponentMetaDataCollection.New

destination.ComponentClassID = "DTSAdapter.ExcelDestination"

' Create the design-time instance of the destination.

Dim destDesignTime As CManagedComponentWrapper = destination.Instantiate

' The ProvideComponentProperties method creates a default input.

destDesignTime.ProvideComponentProperties()

destination.RuntimeConnectionCollection(0).ConnectionManager = DtsConvert.ToConnectionManager90(conDest)

destDesignTime.SetComponentProperty("AccessMode", 0)

'runtime Exception here

destDesignTime.SetComponentProperty("OpenRowSet", "functions")

Guess time!

If you post the error details, it normally helps. I'll guess at error HResult 0xC0204006, some notes - http://wiki.sqlis.com/default.aspx/SQLISWiki/0xC0204006.html

Properties are case sensitive, and it is called OpenRowset not OpenRowSet.

How did i do?

|||Yep, the case sensitivity was it. Thanks!

How to set report server

Hey everyone

I have a requirment here. I create a report that works fine in my local machine. But I want to keep this in a server so that every body can access it. How do I do that any clues please.How to set that what are steps to do that ?Did you install SQL Server Reporting Services? This is a server component of SQL Server that does exactly what you are asking. Are you using SQL Server 2005?|||yes I install reporting services and when I run the report it works fine but I am wondering is there any walkthrough to how to see thw report in web services.|||If you have installed Reporting Services on your server, then go to http://localhost/reports and you can upload the report (.RDL file). From there others can access the report and enter the required parameters to view the report.|||Hi,
I want to upload an rdl file programmatically. Is there anyone who can help me?
Thanks.|||You need to call the SOAP API CreateReport|||thanks but I have another question.
now I need to create subscription for a report. there is a method called createsubscription. but I don't know the values of parameters. in msdn documents, it says

extensionParams[0] = new ParameterValue();
extensionParams[0].Name = "ReplyTo";
extensionParams[0].Value = "reporting@.microsoft.com";

for example.
but how do we know that the name should be "ReplyTo". Are these names discribed somewhere? if so, where? if not, what should we write for each parameter.
I should prepare aspx pages as same as the reporting server web interface. but I do not have enough info.is there a web page that has detailed info other than msdn?
thanks for your help.

How to set permissions for objects quickly

After I create a user (ref to database), then I need to assign 'select' &
'exec' rights at permissions for all objects. But there are over 1000
objects. How can I set the permissions quickly? Can I do it at query

Alternatively, what is the best way to setup this if want to add / rename
