How to simplify XML Query? (SQL2000)

Hi, I am trying to write a query in SQL 2000 to produce a slightly more than
just basic xml schema. I can do the query using FOR XML EXPLICIT, but as the
schema that I want to produce is quite large (with a reasonable amount of
repitition) this seems unnecessarily complicated. A simplified version of the
schema I want to produce is:
<ArrayOfEntity>
<Entity Key=123>
<Name>...</Name>
<Prop1>...</Prop1>
<Prop2>...</Prop2>
<Prop3>...</Prop3>
<Node1 Key=32>text</Node1>
<Node2 Key=43>text</Node2>
<Node3 Key=54>text</Node3>
<Node4 Key=65>text</Node4>
</Entity>
<Entity Key=234>
...
</Entity>
</ArrayOfEntity>
The thing is, there are quite a few of these child "Node"s, which will only
contain a key and text value. There are also more complicated child nodes
(not shown here).
I was quite excited to find the [Element!Num!Attr!xml] explicit column name,
because I could then write a function to generate the child node. But this
does not seem to allow me to specify the Node Key's!! :(
Is there any way to write a reasonably simple query to get the above schema'

You will need to use the FOR XML EXPLICIT option if you wish to retrieve the
data in this format. A different approach you be to apply a transform after
the data has been extracted. You could use XSLT to do this, possibly use the
document()
function to include and export the data in fragments.

Can you do XSL Transforms in SQL 2000?

It should be possible to do this using the SP_OA... procedures but really I
would expect it to be done externally.
You may want to look at SQL2005 as this could all be done a lot easier using
.NET

data in this format. A different approach you be to apply a transform after
the data has been extracted. You could use XSLT to do this, possibly use the
document()
function to include and export the data in fragments.

How to Setup Linked Server within Same SQL Server

Been wandering around the searches and cannot find a specific answer so hopefully someone can help me. Basic situation is I'm setting up an automatic transfering of data to a historical database that resides on the same SQL Server.

exec sp_dropserver 'linked1', 'droplogins'
exec sp_addlinkedserver 'linked1', 'SQL Server'
exec sp_setnetname 'linked1', <Databasename>
exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'linked1', 'false', null, <user>, <password>

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
go
SET ANSI_WARNINGS ON
go
select * from openquery (linked1, 'select * from dbo.table')

I run this and it says it cannot find the instance...You cannot specify local server as a linked server.|||If you check the documentation for sp_addlinkedserver (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/tsqlref/ts_sp_adda_8gqa.asp), it looks like example 2 is almost exactly what you need. Just provide the machine name instead of machine\instance and you'll be in business!

I even decided to try it on one of my Prod servers (SP3a) and it failed just like on my Personal Edition (SP3a).|||My test machine runs at sp2, because many of the third-party applications that I support won't run properly under sp3a. That may well be the difference.

My home machines run at sp3a. I'll have to test it there when I get the chance.

-PatP|||I was actually about to suggest, that if it's the same server then you don't need OPENQUERY, or a linked server for that matter. Just a cross-database query would do.

How to set up my tables

Hi everyone,

I am very new to Sql Server and Visual Basic. I am trying to put together a football game. I need to set up a database full of teams for the game to choose from and match up against one another. I need mulitple teams, each with individual players, positions and ratings. No matter what I do I just cant seem to get this to set up the way I want it to. I want to be able to pick the team from a combobox and the players and ratings for each player appear in the textboxes I have provided. I know this shouldn't be very hard, but I have been stuck on this for months now. Please help!

P.S. I do know how to basically set up a database, assign textboxes to database values and all that. I just basically can't figure out the relationships of tables needed in the database to make this work. Thanks again!

You want 2 tables:

Table 1: tblTeams

-

TeamName Primary Key

TeamID Pimary Key identity

Table 2: tblPlayers

-

PlayerName Primary Key

TeamID

Ratings

Once you have the tables designed, the dropdown can ask the team and display the players or display the player to identify the team.

This will display all players on whichever team is selected

SELECT p.Players FROM tblTeams t

JOIN tblPlayers p on t.TeamID = p.TeamID

WHERE t.TeamName = txtTeam.text

This will display the team that the player is on:

SELECT t.TeamName FROM tblTeams t

JOIN tblPlayers p on t.TeamID = p.TeamID

WHERE p.PlayerName= txtPlayer.text

Adding to Adam's presentation, if this is a multi-user 'fantasy football' type simulation, you will be presented with multiple users creating 'their' individual Teams. As well as each Team containing multiple Players, A particular Player can exists on multiple Teams.

In that situation, it may be helpful to allow Players to be select to multiple teams, so in addition to Teams and Players, a Team-Player table would likely be useful.
